The Celsius temperature scale, originally known as the centigrade scale, was developed by Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius in 1742. Today, it serves as the international standard for temperature measurement, used in scientific research and daily life across most countries worldwide.

Celsius initially defined his scale in reverse of its current form, setting 0° as the boiling point of water and 100° as the freezing point. After his death, his colleagues, including Carl Linnaeus, reversed the scale to its now-familiar form, making 0° the freezing point and 100° the boiling point of water at standard atmospheric pressure.

The Celsius scale gained global adoption due to its logical basis in water's properties and its decimal-based system. In 1948, the Ninth General Conference on Weights and Measures officially renamed the "centigrade scale" to the "Celsius scale" in honor of its creator. Today, it is the standard temperature scale in all countries except the United States, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands.

Celsius's scientific contributions extended beyond temperature measurement. He made significant advances in astronomy, including the first measurement of star magnitudes and the discovery of the connection between the aurora borealis and Earth's magnetic field. His temperature scale remains one of the most widely used scientific measurements in human history.
